English description provided by the architects.

Emerging in the late 1990s, the Korean PC Bang has served as a social hub within urban youth culture, where friends gather to play games and grab a meal.

Going beyond the notion of a simple internet café, it has evolved into a uniquely Korean gaming lounge that combines high-speed internet, high-performance gaming equipment, and an independent F&B service delivered directly to the users' seats.

Alongside the growth of E-SPORTS, Korean PC Bang culture has also expanded beyond a place to play games into a space for new forms of leisure and social interaction.

While conventional PC Bangs have traditionally been operated around high seating capacity and efficiency, there is now a growing need to diversify the spatial experience in response to a wider range of users and patterns of use.

SHIFT PC moves beyond the singular function of gaming, transforming itself into a new cultural space where diverse patterns of stay and interaction can coexist.

Conventional PC Bangs have typically relied on repetitive, uniform layouts designed to accommodate as many individual seats as possible, combined with dark and vivid lighting that reinforces a stereotypical 'gaming' image.

Today, however, the customer base is more diverse, and not everyone prefers a dark atmosphere.

We combine 'PIXEL,' the smallest unit that forms a digital image, with the essence embedded in the name of SHIFT, developing the concept of 'PIXEL SHIFT.'

Rather than remaining within the digital realm, PIXEL is brought into the physical environment and expanded as a spatial unit of everyday life.

Through this approach, we create shifts within a standardized everyday environment, generating new possibilities for people to understand and experience the brand through space.

A 'PIXEL' reveals different colors and shades even within a uniform arrangement. By shifting these otherwise fixed PIXELS out of alignment, gaps emerge, creating the potential to open into another space.

Through this movement, individual elements come together or separate, taking on different volumes.

The gaps formed between these shifted units are deliberately left open, while variations in height preserve the individuality of each mass.

These volumes created through the movement of PIXELS are transformed into partitions, allowing customers to choose between individual and group seating according to their needs, group size, and situation.

Upon entering the space, a compact lounge provides a place for those who need to wait briefly.

Minimal benches and distinctive objects add a sense of wit to the space, while the counter immediately ahead is defined by a red metal wall in the brand color, naturally guiding customers through the space without confusion.

After being welcomed, customers encounter the kiosk as they turn their attention toward the counter, allowing both familiar and unfamiliar PC Bang users to use the space with ease.

A kitchen is positioned behind a vivid red wall to streamline staff circulation while minimizing elements that may feel visually uncomfortable from the customer's perspective.

This creates a clean and orderly impression appropriate for a space that also incorporates F&B.

Beyond the counter, customers explore the spaces between a variety of partitions, discovering a place to stay according to their individual needs.

Moving through the different masses created by the shifting PIXELS and the gaps between them, customers can choose from individual to group seating based on their party size and situation.

At the end of the journey, another red wall marks the space, adding a sense of vitality while helping customers recognize their location within the space.

The overall tone and manner are intentionally lighter and more playful.

Moving completely away from the conventional atmosphere of a PC Bang, a modern palette combined with warm wood creates a comfortable environment that minimizes fatigue even during extended stays.

The brand's signature red is introduced throughout the space to heighten its visual clarity and presence.

The ceiling is left exposed and open so that the partitions become the primary spatial elements.

Above them, clustered PIXELS appear to rise and tilt, forming ceiling structures that illuminate each individual mass. The movement of the PIXELS, together with the voids that emphasize them, becomes a design language, with the lines of the displaced voids along the PIXEL contours shaping the structural elements.

Wire mesh is applied to the surface of the structures, suggesting the aggregation of individual PIXELS. Exposed light sources within custom-made fixtures add a sense of speed and dynamic energy. Distinctive objects placed throughout the space also soften an atmosphere that could otherwise feel somewhat heavy.

Ultimately, the masses created through the movement of PIXELS, together with the gaps between them, create new experiences in which each customer can move through and inhabit the space in their own way. The memories created through these individual experiences encourage them to return to SHIFT once again.
