English description provided by the architects.
In South Korea, beaches with surfable waves are rare. This scarcity has fostered unique local cultures in the few coastal towns where surfing is possible.
Yangyang-gun stands as the symbolic birthplace of this culture and remains a vibrant hub for the community today.
Waveworks Yangyang was established here as a "workation" center—a space designed for the coexistence of work and vacation.
Within its open, multi-purpose interior, individuals work with a sense of freedom that reflects the modern era of the mobile office.
The tranquility of the shoreline is the site's most valuable asset. To preserve this quietude, the building adopts a simple, linear form with a typical gable roof.
The design specifically addresses the harsh coastal environment, including saline winds, high humidity, and intense UV exposure. The glazing is reinforced with metal frames and triple-layered safety glass.
For the roof and eaves, an exposed waterproof membrane was selected for its ease of maintenance and its tactile similarity to the neoprene of a surfing wetsuit.
The acts of working and resting are both journeys toward finding oneself. Rising from the roofline, a vertical light well serves as a metaphorical lighthouse for the project.
The soft light, like a lighthouse on the night sea, leaves people with a quiet and peaceful memory.
