In their latest office conversion, Los Angeles-based design and architecture studio 22RE introduces a vibrant, residentially inspired workplace for LA creative agency Day Job.
The 1,800-square-foot building in Glassell Park - formerly the studio of artist Ed Ruscha - sets the tone with an austere monolithic exterior clad in locally sourced Douglas fir and stucco.
Every material and detail tells part of the story: cherry-wood paneling lends warmth against the green concrete flooring; stainless steel countertops - a 22RE signature - meet orange cement tiles paired with Heath Ceramics backsplash in the kitchen.
Residential design cues - like a kitchen island, varying floor elevations, and lounge seating — bridge the comforts of home with the needs of a cutting-edge studio, creating a space that feels playful, functional, and unmistakably warm.
The office then unfolds intuitively across programmatic zones: beyond the central collaborative space are a private conference room featuring a custom sculptural table by 22RE, an editing suite, kitchen, lounge, and two restrooms.
Throughout, custom furnishings by 22RE - from bespoke desks to a full dining set including chairs, and a lounge ensemble featuring a sofa, lounge chair, and coffee table - underscore the firm's integrated approach.
Lighting moments include Pivotante à Poser Table Lamps by Nemo; Tekio Horizontal Pendants in the piazza; Fibonacci Lamps by Sophus in the conference and lounge areas; and sconces by Motoko Ishii for Staff adorning the central columns, forming a cohesive visual rhythm with the interior architecture.
Distinctly Californian in palette and sensibility, the project marks a bolder embrace of color and geometry for 22RE.
By layering natural elements with texture, form, and rich materiality, the studio cultivates a tailored, expressive environment, one that balances focus, connection, and creative exploration in equal measure.
