The Corner House renovation project transforms a building over 100 years old into a mixed-use space that connects the community in this neighborhood.
The Corner House, formerly known as Chai Phatthana Sin, is an old building that stands prominently on the corner of Charoen Krung Road.
Each side of the building borders the historic communities of Charoen Krung and Talat Noi, areas that are constantly bustling with activity.
Historically, this was a key trading district in Bangkok, and it has since been revitalized as a Creative District rich in history, culture, and people.
IF views the building's location and context as essential elements in this project's design, guiding us to create architecture that harmonizes with the city's original fabric.
With the goal of creating a community space, we explored ways to make the building a bridge between the city and its people, leveraging its original, charming structure.
We decided to preserve the look and color of the building on the second and third floors, while transforming the ground floor into a space that directly connects with the surrounding historic neighborhood.
We transformed the ground floor to function like the "basement" of a traditional Thai house, removing the solid walls and original wrought iron.
IF designed new folding doors, reinterpreting the traditional folding doors of the nearby neighborhood.
When fully opened, these doors create a seamless, open space with a clear line of sight from the Charoen Krung Road entrance through to the canal at the back, enhancing ventilation throughout the building.
This ground-level space invites people to pass through, take shelter from the rain, or simply walk across to the other side—no purchase required.
nside the ground floor of the building, we preserved the original concrete beam structure and enhanced the charm of the existing ceiling with carefully arranged lighting.
