NewYork-Presbyterian Queens (NYPQ) – one of the nation’s most comprehensive, integrated academic health care delivery systems – sought to upgrade and expand its intensive care units and create a new amenities-level medical/surgical unit with single-patient rooms following Planetree principles.

EwingCole planned and designed three 20-bed intensive care units and an 18-bed medical/surgical floor. The ICUs are acuity adaptable, enabling patients to remain on the unit while care needs progress.

The design for the new amenities unit provides a personalized experience for each patient. Large waiting areas and family rooms offer space for family gatherings, while quieter reflection rooms and respite zones provide more intimate spaces for rest and recovery.

The design creates an environment of care that respects NYPQ’s diverse patient population, encouraging compassionate interactions while preserving patient dignity and modesty.
